21st year community provides meals for needy neighbors

Each year for 21 years, the Bullis community has come together to help make Thanksgiving a happy holiday for some of our needy neighbors. Working with the Housing Opportunities Commission of Montgomery County (HOC), parents, students and staff donate items for a basket filled with everything a family may need to celebrate Thanksgiving: from mashed potatoes to gravy, vegetables to the roasting pan, and even a Giant gift certificate to purchase a turkey, all wrapped into a handy laundry basket.

This year we put together 106 baskets, with every parent, student and staff member involved in donating! In addition, the National Junior Honor Society makes sure that all the baskets are missing no items, and parent volunteers wrap up the baskets. Lower School students make handmade holiday greeting cards as well.

To cap it off, more than 75 students and parents and staff came in on the Saturday morning before Thanksgiving to bake homemade apple pies. The delicious smells of cinnamon and sugar wafted from the kitchen as the various stations--apple peeling, apple slicing, apple preparation, pie crust and assembly—were busy at work. Every pie box was also decorated by hand. 185 pies were made, one for each HOC basket and the 79 additional pies went to Martha's Table for their holiday meals.

The Housing Opportunities Commission serves nearly 14,000 of Montgomery County's most vulnerable low-income families, elderly and disabled households. "Through partnerships like the one with Bullis, HOC tries to ensure that holidays are filled with family, cheer and good memories for our customers," says Shauna Sorrels, director of legislative and public affairs for HOC. "Also, connecting our customers to the larger community goes a long way to eliminating isolation. HOC thanks the Bullis community for extending themselves to others in need during this holiday season."
