Upper School Principal
Thanks for your interest in our Upper School. We know you have a lot of great choices in the DC-area for grades 9-12, but we feel our program is truly exceptional in its balance of arts, academics and athletics. Students here do not have to give up a favorite activity to focus on another. Our teachers focus on quality of assignments over quantity, and use technology and engaging projects to make learning more meaningful and relevant to students today. We juggle a challenging course curriculum with new signature programs to provide an array of interesting classes, and enhance classroom learning with social and community development opportunities that help students learn to make smart decisions and respect each other and themselves.Come for a tour and please visit this page to learn more about what makes our Upper School so special. I look forward to meeting you.
The application for the 2018-2019 school year will be available on September 1, 2017.
Applications are due Friday, January 5, 2018; supplemental materials will continue to be accepted after this date. Applications submitted after the deadline will be considered on a space-available basis.
We tour and interview as many applicants to grades 9-12 as we can, but the calendar fills up quickly. Please call the Admission Office at 301-983-5724 after you have submitted your online pre-application to schedule the interview and tour the school while classes are in session. If you submit an application after the January 5, 2018 deadline, interview times may not be available.
You may also schedule your child’s shadow visit; see Step 6 below.
During the student’s visit, we will ask him/her to write an informal essay in our office. No preparation is needed for this.
Applicants to grades 9 through 12 are required to take either the SSAT or the ISEE. Our SSAT code is 1960 and our ISEE code is 210955. Results from the PSAT (taken in sophomore or junior year) or SAT/ACT may also be submitted, if they are available.
In addition to one of the above standardized tests, we highly recommend the Character Skills Snapshot offered through SSAT. Character and personal growth are an integral part of a Bullis education and the Snapshot measures attributes that are aligned with our Bullis values. Grades and test scores do not tell the whole story of your child; this additional assessment provides more holistic information.
Students may register for both the SSAT and this additional assessment at the same time. If you take and submit a different test, you may register for the Snapshot here.
The visit is an optional step in the application process for Upper School applicants, yet it is an excellent opportunity for students to experience life at Bullis. The Admission Office has set aside select Wednesdays as shadow dates for applicants. Students must be active applicants in order to shadow, meaning that an application must be on file and a student interview completed or scheduled. Spaces are limited, so please call the Admission Office at 301-983-5724 to schedule this visit after you have submitted your application.
Using the application user ID and password you can check the status of your application. All families are expected to follow the status of their child’s application online in the application portal. Please check this regularly to ensure that your forms have been received and your application file is complete before the application deadline.
