9th Annual Event Raises Money and Spirits!
For the 9th year, Bullis parents coordinated a fund- and friendraiser for the Bullis community in support of several local organizations. More than 700 participants turned out on a nice spring morning to run in the 5k, walk the 2.5k course and buddy-up with more than 125 special needs kids from KEEN, The Diener School and Special Olympics of Maryland, some of the beneficiary organizations.
Nearly $35,000 was raised for these organizations and Habitat for Humanity. Special needs students were matched with a Bullis student volunteer to play games, enjoy inflatable toys and run in a Buddy Run around the Bullis track. Other student volunteers led the special needs students on pony rides, arts and crafts and face-painting activities.
WJLA's Eileen Whelan served as the honorary master of ceremonies and helped kick off the festivities, including a group-wide warm-up session before all the race events began. When the 5k ended, Bullis 10th grader Tony Patrinos took first place in the men's division (with 11th grader Tyler Pina and 8th grader Henry Sun placing 2nd and 3rd, respectively). On the women's side Madeline Vinal took 1st, while Bullis 6th grader Clarke Norman came in 2nd and 6th grader Eleanor Sun came in 3rd.
The smiles on the faces of all the attendees in our photo gallery tell the story of the good times everyone had. "Many of the students who attended came to school proudly wearing their medals," wrote Diener School Head Noreen Buchanan. "Our parents shrared how much fun their children had and how they love to attend each year because they love their Bullis Buddies! It is truly a touching and beautiful partnership."
