In Memory of Tyamonee Johnson 1996 - 2018

Dear Bullis Community,

On December 30, we lost one of our own when Bullis alumnus Tyamonee Johnson '14 was killed in an act of gun violence in Maryland while on winter break from Wagner College, where he was pursuing an MBA.

Tyamonee came to Bullis in 7th grade, and in Upper School he was both a football and track star. He always had a huge smile on his face, and was well liked and respected by his peers and teachers. Both his football and track coaches remember him as a very kind, selfless young man. He was a leader on his teams, always putting them first—if you asked him to do something, you knew it would get done. His track coach described Tyamonee as the kid you wanted others to model their behavior and character after. His football coach considered him a great leader and an unbelievable worker. Tyamonee was also one of the few male students courageous enough to brave the dance studio by taking both Intro to Dance and Dance Ensemble. His dance teacher remembers him fondly with pride in his perseverance and the effort he brought to a skill so new to him.

I spoke with Tyamonee's family, and they expressed how much his time at Bullis meant to him and how his experience here propelled him toward pursuing a college education at Wagner and recently an MBA program.

The devastation that his death leaves for his family, including his young daughter, is unfathomable. I know the loss is deeply felt in our Bullis community as well, and at Wagner College also. Tyamonee had such a bright future ahead of him, and his potential impact on others was clearly part of that. Society has lost a leader.

A memorial service will be held Monday, January 14, 2019 at the New Macedonia Baptist Church at 4115 Alabama Avenue SE, Washington, D.C. with a visitation at 10:00 am and a funeral at 11:00am. Details of a tribute will be shared in the near future.
