Achieve Excellence Through Balance

At Bullis, we believe that the best education is achieved through balance. Here, students learn and grow, discover academic and extra-curricular passions, value community, develop lifelong skills and are happier and more confident because of the balance we provide.

Diverse Community

Diversity makes our community strong. Students come from a wide range of backgrounds and have differing learning styles, abilities and interests. This enriches the campus experience for everyone.

Participation requirements place students in athletics or arts activities they may not necessarily gravitate to, and through that they learn to appreciate the abilities of others and develop friendships throughout the student body. Finding a common bond—in a shared interest or, perhaps, a shared lack of ability in something!—is often a source of lasting friendships.

As a community we share school pride and an appreciation for talent, effort and achievement. We celebrate differences, and seek out windows through which we learn about the experiences of others.

Our Campus

While our campus is large—102 acres and a variety of buildings and facilities—the average class size is only 15 students and we enjoy many opportunities to bring students of all ages together.

Every week starts with an all-school assembly. Senior buddies pair up with Lower Schoolers for reading and fun throughout the year. Peer mentors guide younger students, and our newest and youngest students each year are welcomed by a 12th grade lifer who has been at Bullis since 3rd grade.

And as for those 102 acres? Students enjoy them daily in many ways: our own cross-country course, amphitheater for classes and gatherings, lunch outside, reading by a trickling waterfall or simply a nice walk and fresh air between classes.

Bullis teachers focus more on quality than on quantity of coursework, and combine high expectations with flexibility. Students and parents praise the true caring that teachers show for their students both inside and outside the classroom. Teachers adeptly juggle the progression of a class with the needs of individual students. The focus is on the material and skill development rather than simply assessing grades—and continually seeking new methods to engage students so they develop a love of learning.

Traditional and Progressive

At Bullis, we have a strong sense of who we are. Uniforms and formality with our teachers harken back to our traditional roots. Our core values remain consistent, yet evolving to the current day may be the most important tradition here. Discovering new technologies, becoming global citizens, developing new academic programs, trying new approaches to teaching and learning and taking trips outside of our campus—and our country—are just a few ways we make a Bullis education enduring and relevant.

You can pursue your dreams, and don’t have to give up one dream to pursue another

Kathryn M., 12th grade

Our children can be fully involved in athletics and arts and take challenging courses, but rarely feel stressed or overwhelmed. They have grown considerably with all they have taken on, and still are smiling when they come home.
