Reading Millionaires

Our Lower Schoolers read and read and read, and aim for a total of a MILLION words. Why? Studies prove a direct correlation between reading volume and world knowledge, overall verbal ability and long-term academic achievement. And in the short term: everyone becomes an avid reader!

Many of our Lower School students hit the million mark by October when our first reading millionaires are celebrated. Using Accelerated Reader, students choose their own books and read at least 45 minutes each day. They take short online quizzes for each book and teachers monitor progress. And yes, our reading millionaires don't stop there. They keep going!

With all this reading, our students have many recommendations and favorites, including:

Grade 2
My Weird School (series)
The Boxcar Children (series)
Secrets of Droon (series)

Grade 3
Historical fiction
Jake and Lilly (series)
Who Was Harry Houdini?
Jason and the Argonauts

Grade 4

Sam’s habit of reading, so lovingly and carefully cultivated in lower school, has become a very real, defining part of who he is as a person.

Julia Beck, parent

I teach the classics and have found my students to be more insightful and articulate during class discussions since the Lower School began the reading program. The students’ abilities to recognize inferences, foreshadowing, setting, characterization, and other elements of literature have improved and very positively impacted their work in my class.
