Director: A North Carolina native, Rashita Connelly is a painter and has been a high school art teacher in Washington, D.C. for nearly six years. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Visual Art Design from North Carolina A&T State University and attended Howard University’s MFA painting program. Rashita works both as a professional artist and for the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. Her personal work explores a narrative of portraiture through the classical Baroque period. Rashita uses her extensive background and passion to educate and empower young people through the arts. Over her years as an art teacher, she has realized that scholars are able to achieve a sense of freedom and value in the creative process as they learn to create art.
