In an innovative twist on traditional biology lessons, Upper School students are exploring the world of enzymes through a creative hands-on activity using Lego bricks. This engaging approach simplifies complex biological concepts and makes learning interactive and memorable.

During the activity, students use their hands to represent the active site of an enzyme, while pairs of Lego bricks symbolize substrates. The challenge is straightforward: students must separate as many Lego pairs as they can within a timeframe of 10 seconds. This exercise serves as a practical model to understand how efficiently enzymes break down starches under varying conditions.

The experiment begins under normal conditions, where students easily separate the Lego pieces, mirroring the efficient functioning of enzymes within optimal pH and temperature ranges. However, as the lesson progresses, the challenges increase. Students explore scenarios in which enzymes face difficult conditions, such as being denatured by extreme heat or pH levels. To simulate these challenges, they are required to close their eyes or wear ziplock gloves while attempting to separate the Lego pieces.
