Middle School Diversity Co-Chair Facilitates Workshop on DEI in Athletics at NAIS PoCC Conference
Middle School Diversity Co-Chair, Bobby Horsey, recently co-facilitated a workshop at the 2023 NAIS People of Color Conference (PoCC) in St. Louis, Missouri. The workshop was titled “The Locker Room: Where the Movement Toward Belonging is Also Happening” and explored ways athletic departments can incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices into their programs.
Horsey’s workshop was well-received by attendees, eager to learn how to create more equitable and inclusive environments within their athletic departments. The workshop covered a variety of topics, including how to engage with athletes and their families, how to ensure that coaches are trained in DEI practices, and how to develop programs that are inclusive of all athletes, regardless of their background.
According to Horsey, having these conversations is important for two primary reasons. The first reason is to collect data that can be used to offer even more helpful workshops at future PoCC events. The second reason is to collaborate with other attendees to come up with new ideas on how to create DEI programs for athletics.
Horsey’s workshop was a valuable addition to the conference, and his insights will undoubtedly help athletic departments across the country create more inclusive and equitable programs. By working together to create a more diverse and inclusive athletic community, we can ensure that all athletes, coaches, and families feel welcome and valued.
