Rising Bullis Junior, Meyer Shapiro '23 Captures 2021 Cadet World Wrestling Gold in Budapest, Hungary
The second day of the Cadet World Championships wrapped up with Meyer Shapiro '23 bringing home a gold medal for team USA in the (16U) World Freestyle Wrestling Championships! Shapiro (USA), the 65 kg wrestling champion, defeated Giorgi Gogritchiani (GEO) in a stunning 8-4 victory.
65kg was considered the weight class to watch as it had the deepest pool of talent in the entire tournament.
Round of 16
In the opening bout of the day Shapiro quickly dispatched Tymur Yusov of Ukraine with a pin in 1:40. Yusov took 5th place at the 2019 World Combat Games in Budapest, Hungary.
Quarter Finals
Shapiro faced a tough opponent in Russian Khabib Zavurbekov for his quarter final match, but stayed the course and trusted his work ethic to move on with an 8-6 win.
Semi Finals
Shapiro needed just 1:57 to capture his final match on Day 1 against Aghanazar Novruzov of Azerbaijan. Shapiro jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first 45 seconds before wrapping up the bout in the next minute.
Finals
Shapiro led 1-0 early as Gogritchiani failed to score after being put on the shot clock for being passive.
Gogritchiani and Shapiro split points on the Georgian's throw that earned him 4 points and Shapiro 2.
Heading into the final period Shapiro's conditioning and training took over as he wore out the former European Cadet medalist and scored at will in the last 60 second of the bout.
Shapiro is no stranger to success, while wrestling at Bullis he racked up a State title as a 9th grader before taking runner up laurels at the National Prep Tournament. Shapiro also placed 3rd at the Powerade Invite and 5th at the prestigious Beast of the East.
Congratulations, Meyer - 2021 65kg Cadet World Champion! We are so proud!
