Dear Bullis Families,
Just a quick note to mark the first days of the 2023 school year!
Yesterday morning, despite the rain, our fabulous Seniors, Class of 2023, greeted cars at the front gate. It’s a joyful tradition, and one that I hope is enjoyed by all. We had three divisional assemblies, which, in their own way, brought the divisions together through a discussion of our shared values: Caring – Challenging – Community. And in my remarks at each of the assemblies, I addressed the importance of engagement, trying one’s hardest, and, of course, generosity of spirit - kindness. It’s as important for our 12th grade students to hear these expectations as it is for the kindergarteners. In the spirit of engagement, I resolved that going forward, I would spend less time on my phone. Specifically, I resolved not to be looking at my phone as I am walking around campus. I hope this will be good for me, will allow me to role model good practice, and will potentially be a harbinger for what is coming for others! I have to say, even on day one, it was REALLY hard! What was I thinking? Let’s see how this goes–the consequence of any failure on my part is a Blue Gold Dress Day!
The students and faculty loved the food provided by the new catering service, Meriwether Godsey, but the breadth of choices and a new format meant that queues moved very slowly. It will improve. Fortunately, the food is worth it. And in other first day news, the afternoon carpool was, um, tough! It too will improve, especially as Middle School sports start and new parents get used to the routine. Middle School parents–please do not arrive until 3:20 pm at the earliest!
All in all, it was a terrific day. The cherry on top came in the form of an email I was forwarded last night: "H said, 'Mom, this school is crazy, there is literally every kind of kid.'" Loved it!!!
I hope that all our students–and especially our new students–loved their first day. We all know that excitement is often tinged with anxiety, and if there is anything we can do to help, please don’t hesitate to reach out to deans, counselors, division directors, or myself.
