Dr. Samuel Sanders '95 Winner of MATA's William B. Howard Team Physician Award

Bullis School proudly congratulates our Team Physician and distinguished alumnus, Dr. Samuel Sanders ’95, MD, FAAOS, on receiving the prestigious William B. Howard Team Physician Award from the Maryland Athletic Trainers' Association (MATA).

Presented in memory of Dr. William H. B. Howard, the award recognizes a physician who exemplifies the dedication, leadership, and commitment that define an outstanding team physician. The honor celebrates individuals who go above and beyond in caring for athletes, supporting athletic trainers, and advancing the field of sports medicine.

A native of Potomac, Maryland, Dr. Sanders was valedictorian of the Bullis Class of 1995. During his time at Bullis, he excelled both academically and athletically as a member of the nationally ranked soccer and tennis teams, earning all-county honors along the way.

Today, Dr. Sanders is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon (MD, FAAOS) with Greater Washington Orthopaedic Group, PA. His practice focuses on treating fractures, muscle and tendon injuries, joint reconstruction, and sports-related conditions while helping patients regain mobility and health through compassionate, comprehensive care.

Following his graduation from Bullis, Dr. Sanders earned his undergraduate degree in the biological basis of behavior from University of Pennsylvania before attending The George Washington University School of Medicine. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the prestigious Hospital for Joint Diseases and trained extensively in trauma care and fractures at the renowned R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. He later pursued a fellowship in arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine at the University at Buffalo, where he provided orthopaedic care for the Buffalo Sabres and athletes at Buffalo State College.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Sanders remains deeply committed to supporting local student-athletes, including those at his alma mater. As Bullis School’s Team Physician, he provides invaluable guidance and care to our athletic program, working closely with coaches, athletic trainers, students, and families to ensure the health and wellbeing of our athletes both on and off the field.

The William B. Howard Team Physician Award honors physicians who demonstrate exceptional service through responsibilities such as sideline coverage, injury care, policy development, and year-round support of athletic training staffs. Dr. Sanders embodies these qualities through his tireless dedication, professionalism, and passion for caring for athletes.

We are incredibly proud to celebrate Dr. Sanders for this well-deserved recognition and grateful for the expertise, leadership, and compassion he brings to the Bullis community every day.
