John attended Bullis from seventh through twelfth grade. He was a running back on the varsity football team his sophomore through senior years. As a senior he was selected captain and also led the team in scoring. He made second team All-IAC in football as a senior. He also ran varsity track his final three years in high school.

He attended Furman University where he played defensive back on their football team for four years. During his senior season, Furman's secondary was ranked second in the country for fewest passing yards allowed per game.

While attending law school in the area after graduation from Furman, he helped coach football at Bullis.
