When Robert Stien ’94, P’29, ’32 stepped into the role of Alumni Board Chair, he saw more than a leadership position—he saw an opportunity to strengthen the bond between alumni and Bullis. Inspired by the school’s resilience during Covid and proud to now see his own children thriving on campus, Robert reflects on the values Bullis instilled in him, the joy of family traditions, and his vision for alumni to play a powerful role in shaping the school’s future.
What inspired you to take on the role of Alumni Board Chair?
I’ve always believed in giving back to the communities that shaped me, and Bullis has been an important part of my life. During Covid, I was especially impressed by the way the school cared for its students, including my son, and I knew Bullis was on a strong path forward. When the opportunity came to serve as Alumni Board Chair, I saw it as a chance to deepen the connections between alumni and the school. It’s inspiring to link past, present, and future generations of Bulldogs and to help alumni feel proud of the important role they play in supporting students and advancing Bullis’ mission.
How do you feel Bullis has shaped who you are today?
Bullis instilled in me the values of hard work, resilience, and community. The teachers and coaches challenged me to strive for excellence while also emphasizing character and leadership. Those lessons have guided me throughout my career and continue to influence how I approach family and community life.
What do you like to do with your family?
Family time is everything to me. We’re a hockey family and love going to Washington Capitals games together. We also spend time at the beach whenever we can—it’s one of our favorite traditions. Weekends are reserved for family, whether it’s cheering at my son’s hockey games, watching my daughter’s soccer matches, or enjoying simple moments like family meals, movie nights, or board games at home. Those everyday experiences are what keep us close and grounded.
What does it mean to you to now have your children attend Bullis as well?
It’s incredibly meaningful. As a parent, nothing is more rewarding than seeing your children benefit from the same environment that shaped you. Watching them walk the same halls, build their own friendships, and be guided by dedicated faculty fills me with pride and gratitude.
How have you seen the school grow for the better since your days as a student?
Bullis has grown tremendously. The academic offerings are stronger and more diverse, with innovative programs in areas like STEM, Entrepreneurship, the arts, and leadership. The campus itself has expanded in impressive ways, but what stands out most is the school’s unwavering commitment to educating the whole student—academically, socially, and emotionally. That holistic approach has only deepened since my time here.
What do you see as the biggest opportunities for alumni leadership at Bullis right now?
There is tremendous opportunity for alumni to get involved—whether through mentorship, sharing professional expertise, or helping students build meaningful networks that serve both graduates and the school community. Our alumni have a wealth of experience and talent to offer, and by engaging through events, philanthropy, and volunteering, we can ensure Bullis remains a vibrant, forward-thinking institution. The stronger our connections, the stronger our community becomes.
