Bullis is excited to share that alumnus Matt Ogens '91 has won the prestigious Emmy® Award for Outstanding Arts and Culture Documentary at the 46th Annual News & Documentary Emmy® Awards. Ogens, whose journey from Bullis to the big screen has inspired many, was recognized for his remarkable work as director and producer of MADU, a profoundly moving Disney+ feature that profiles the inspiring journey of Nigerian ballet student Anthony Madu.

Co-directed by the talented Kachi Benson, MADU follows the viral rise of Anthony—a young dancer whose barefoot ballet performance in the rain captivated millions and paved the way for a scholarship at England's Elmhurst Ballet School. The documentary beautifully captures his transformative experience as he navigates a new cultural and artistic landscape, reminding us all of the power of dreams and determination.

Last year, Matt graciously invited the Bullis community to a special screening of MADU at the New African Film Festival (NAFF) in Silver Spring, Maryland. He was present for a meet-and-greet and a Q&A session, sharing insights into the filmmaking process and the powerful story behind the film. This event was a meaningful opportunity for Bullis students, families, and faculty to connect with Matt and be inspired by his journey and creative vision.

At the ceremony held on June 26 at New York City’s iconic Palladium Times Square, MADU proudly took home the coveted Emmy Award in the Arts & Culture category. This honor celebrates not only Matt’s masterful storytelling but also the film’s powerful exploration of cross-cultural growth and resilience. An Emmy-winning and Academy Award–nominated director, Matt previously earned acclaim for Netflix’s Audible, which was Oscar®-nominated, and for ESPN’s 30 for 30: From Harlem with Love, which won a Primetime Emmy®—showcasing his talent for bringing authentic, compelling stories to life.

We are thrilled to send our congratulations to directors Kachi Benson and Matt Ogens '91—an alum who continues to bring distinction to Bullis through his exceptional storytelling and cultural impact, reminding us all of the difference one person can make in the world. Your journey has been incredible, and we can’t wait to see where it leads next!
