How long have you been at Bullis?
Since 2014
What role or roles do you play at Bullis? If you are teaching faculty, what do you teach?
I am the Middle School Counselor and teach 8th Grade Health
What made you decide to work in an educational setting?
In college I worked as an orientation guide for new students and their families. I loved having the opportunity to assist students, helping them to adjust to college and supporting their transition. I decided to pursue a degree in School Counseling so that I could work with students on a daily basis. I found that the Middle School level is my favorite to work with. I enjoy how tweens and teens are so curious and welcome support in managing their academic, social, and emotional needs.
What is your favorite thing about working at Bullis?
There is so much I love about Bullis, but if I have to choose one favorite, I would say leading class discussions in Health. I so enjoy hearing what students think and feel about a variety of topics.
When not at Bullis, what interests do you pursue?
I have always enjoyed traveling, and am a big music fan. My taste is pretty eclectic, but I am a huge musical theater fan. I also love to do Zumba. We are big Badger fans, so you can always find me watching a Wisconsin sporting event. Sadly the pandemic has made it difficult to pursue some of my other favorite activities.
Who is someone that inspires you and how?
My parents inspire me. My mother returned to work full time in an era when very few women did so. My father does all of the food shopping and cooking, again not the "norm" for men of his generation. I admire that they did not allow stereotypical gender roles to dictate their choices.
What is the best book or production that you have read, watched, or listened to lately?
My daughter introduced me to the musical Six. Sadly, no Broadway shows are running right now, but I've seen several clips on YouTube of past performances and really hope that Broadway reopens and we can go see a live performance. I also really enjoyed the docuseries Last Dance about Michael Jordan.
What global challenge would you like to see tackled and how do you see yourself contributing to the positive change that you desire?
Homelessness is something that I find heartbreaking. In particular, a high percentage of homeless adults suffer from mental illness. Helping educate today's youth about mental illness, removing the stigma from getting help, is one way I try to bring positive change.
What is one fun fact about you that others may not know or may surprise them?
I watched the soap opera All My Children for 20+ years and was such a big fan that I attended both the daytime Emmy awards and a soap opera fan event at what was MGM (now Hollywood) Studios in Orlando, Florida. I screamed so loudly at Susan Lucci as she rode by on a float that she turned around and yelled back to me.
Why would you tell a prospective family to choose Bullis?
Bullis really offers it all. Your child can be their authentic self, and not only enjoy amazing academic coursework taught by caring and dedicated teachers, but they can also pursue a variety of artistic and athletic opportunities. I continually see students go out of their comfort zone and try new and challenging things at Bullis. Students can and do get support when needed, but are also encouraged to be independent and responsible citizens who work to be their best selves.
