How long have you been at Bullis?
I have been at Bullis since 2019.
What role or roles do you play at Bullis? If you are teaching faculty, what do you teach?
I teach Upper School Spanish and assist Varsity Volleyball.
What made you decide to work in an educational setting?
My first experience in the educational setting was as a Middle School Volleyball coach. Most of my players had never stepped onto a volleyball court before. With each new skill that those players learned, the larger their smiles grew and the more confident they became. I found joy in having played a role in helping those players reach their goals, and I knew that I wanted teaching to become my career. I have a great passion for travel, languages, and new perspectives, and there is nothing I love more than sharing that passion with students.
What is your favorite thing about working at Bullis?
What I have most loved about this community is that Bullis cares deeply about seeing every community member grow. You can sense joy in our hallways because our staff members are each so passionate about their subject areas and our students are passionate about learning.
When not at Bullis, what interests do you pursue?
Outside of Bullis, I enjoy cooking, hiking, and practicing yoga.
Who is someone that inspires you and how?
My most inspiring role-model is, and will forever be, my mom. My mom is a police officer, and when I was younger I thought it was the most embarrassing thing in the world to be dropped off at school in a police car. I would not have wanted to shout, "That's my mom!" then, but I certainly would now! My mom is incredibly strong, and she is constantly defending others. She puts her family members first, even at her own expense, and for my sister and I that meant that she would support our wildest dreams. My mom set high expectations for us, and continues to dare us to be our best selves. My sister and I both graduated as first generation college students because of her constant support. Each day I hope to be a little bit more like my mom.
What is the best book or production that you have read, watched, or listened to lately?
I just completed the most recent novel from my favorite author, Isabel Allende, called A Long Petal of the Sea.
What global challenge would you like to see tackled and how do you see yourself contributing to the positive change that you desire?
I would like to see global hunger disappear. I believe that every person should be guaranteed the right to access affordable and nutritious food. Millions of people in the US alone are not afforded that opportunity. I am grateful for the ability to give to local food banks and programs that provide students with weekend meals and snacks. I hope to promote awareness of food deserts in the US, and to seek out and support community garden projects with the aim of combating hunger.
What is one fun fact about you that others may not know or may surprise them?
I grew up on a small farm in Tennessee, and I love gardening and raising livestock. It is a dream of mine to have a farm of my own one day!
Why would you tell a prospective family to choose Bullis?
Bullis recognizes that learning is a joyful experience that is distinct for each learner. Here students have an entire community of administrators, teachers, coaches, and fellow students that support their passions, encourage them to take risks, and celebrate their growth along the way. Our students are creative thinkers and leaders because they are given opportunities and tools to explore, collaborate, and seek solutions to the problems they care about most. Students are at the center of each classroom's curriculum.
