Approach to AI in Teaching and Learning

At Bullis, we prepare students to thrive in a world where artificial intelligence is an everyday tool. Because our mission centers on rich intellectual experiences, integrity, belonging, and joyful learning, we treat AI not as a shortcut, but as a context for deeper learning.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to technology that can generate, analyze, or interpret information in ways that mimic human thinking. This includes tools that generate text, images, code, audio, or video.

AI tools can help students explore ideas, gather information, and receive formative support—but they cannot replace the student’s own thinking, voice, or effort. Our Portrait of a Graduate calls students to be joyful lifelong learners, caring global citizens, scholars who embrace challenge, community contributors, and mindful explorers. Thoughtful use of AI can support each of these aims: it can spark curiosity, expand perspectives, model real-world problem solving, and help students communicate more effectively. But it must be used transparently and ethically.

Accordingly:

  • Learning comes first. AI may support the process—brainstorming, outlining, generating examples, checking understanding—but the learning evidence must be the student’s own.
  • Teachers lead the way. Because student-teacher relationships are at the heart of Bullis, teachers will set clear expectations for if, when, and how AI may be used in their courses and will continue to design authentic, process-based tasks that make genuine learning visible.
  • Academic integrity is essential. Students are expected to be transparent about their use of AI tools in academic work. Submitting AI-generated content as one's own work without proper acknowledgment and teacher permission will be addressed through existing school policies.
  • Fluency matters. Students should graduate able to evaluate AI outputs, question bias, protect their data, cite sources appropriately, and choose tools responsibly—just as they do with any other digital resource.
  • Care for community guides use. We commit to using AI tools in ways that foster respect, accuracy, and kindness toward all individuals. AI may not be used to create harmful, misleading, or targeted content.

AI is evolving rapidly, and so will Bullis’ guidance. We will continue to review classroom practices and tools to ensure that our use of AI reflects Bullis’ values, supports joyful and rigorous learning across academics, arts, athletics, and service, and ultimately helps students broaden their horizons and transform our world.
