Bullis School's Founding in 1930

Bullis School was founded in 1930 by Captain (ANG) William F. Bullis, a Naval Academy graduate and a preparatory school teacher, along with his wife, Lois Hoover Bullis, who was also a school teacher. They established the school with the goal of preparing young men for service academy entrance exams. Their vision was to create a supportive educational environment for post-graduate young men aspiring to enroll in service academies. The school started modestly in an embassy building in Washington, D.C., reflecting the founders' commitment to academic excellence and character development.

Bullis’ Visual Identity — Story and Symbolism

Bullis’ updated visual identity honors nearly a century of history while reflecting the School’s ambition and spirit. The centerpiece “B,” inspired by the original 1930s seal, evokes the School’s naval origins with sweeping, wave-like lines and a forward tilt that symbolize boldness and resilience. Complementing the “B” is a versatile Bulldog logo, rooted in archival imagery and designed to convey courage, determination, and pride.

Tradition is also embedded in the new icons: the Acorn and Oak Leaf represent the journey of every student, from their first day to graduation, while the seal incorporates the anchor, laurel wreath, and founding year to connect Bullis’ past to its present. Together, these elements create a cohesive identity used across uniforms, awards, and athletics—carrying forward the enduring Bullis spirit while celebrating generations of students and faculty.
