Community Culture Update - April 2025

Community Culture Update - April 2025

April 2025

Dear Bullis Community,

This month, we celebrate an array of cultural, religious, and social awareness days.  April is filled with opportunities to learn about different cultures, support important causes, and come together as a community. Let's explore these special days and discover how we can make our school and community a more inclusive and understanding place for everyone.

April 2 – World Autism Awareness Day
World Autism Awareness Day helps people understand and accept those with autism. It shows that people with autism have special strengths and can do amazing things. This day encourages everyone to be kind and include people with autism in their communities.

April 9 – International Day of Pink
This day stands against bullying, homophobia, transphobia, and all forms of discrimination, with communities worldwide encouraged to wear pink in solidarity. It’s a call for inclusivity and respect, fostering awareness and support for a safer, more accepting world.

April 11 – National Day of Silence (LGBTQ+)
The National Day of Silence is when people stay quiet to show support for LGBTQ+ students who are bullied. It helps everyone understand how hard it can be for LGBTQ+ people who feel they can't speak up. This day encourages schools to be safe and welcoming for all students.

April 12 - 20th – Passover begins (Jewish)
Passover is a Jewish holiday that commemorates when the Israelites were freed from slavery in Egypt. It lasts for eight days and includes special meals called Seders. During Passover, many Jewish people don't eat bread and instead eat flat bread called matzah.

April 14 – Vaisakhi  (Sikh)
Vaisakhi is an important Sikh festival that marks the creation of the Khalsa, a special group of Sikhs. It's celebrated with parades, singing, and sharing food with others. Sikhs often do good deeds and help their community on this day.

April 20 – Easter (Western Christian & Orthodox)
Easter is a Christian holiday that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This year, both Western Christian and Orthodox Easter fall on the same day, which happens only occasionally due to different calendar calculations. Orthodox Easter, followed in countries like Greece, Ukraine, Ethiopia, and other Eastern European nations, shares the same joyful celebration but includes distinctive traditions such as red-dyed eggs and special breads. Many Christians go to church, have special meals with family, and children often hunt for colorful eggs. It's a time of joy and new beginnings for Christians around the world.

April 22 – Earth Day
Earth Day is when people around the world focus on helping our planet. It's a time to learn about recycling, saving energy, and protecting nature. Many schools and communities plan special activities to clean up parks or plant trees on this day.

April 23 – Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom Hashoah)
Holocaust Remembrance Day honors the memory of six million Jewish people and others who died during World War II. It's a time to learn about this sad part of history and promise it won't happen again. Many people light candles or attend special ceremonies on this day.
