Empowering Lives Through Innovative Design: The Making for Social Good Class at Bullis

The intersection of technology and compassion has fostered remarkable advancements in assistive devices, benefiting individuals in need. At Bullis, the Upper School class Making for Social Good is at the forefront of this movement. Through the cutting-edge resources offered by the BITlab, students are equipped with the skills and tools to design and create innovative solutions that address the daily challenges faced by people with specific needs.

A Hands-On Approach to Social Impact

In Making for Social Good, students embark on a journey where they not only learn technical skills but also cultivate empathy and understanding for those around them. The class encourages creativity and innovation while focusing on practical applications. The goal is straightforward: to design assistive devices that can enhance the quality of life for individuals with disabilities or the elderly.

Devices Available to Our Community

There are many innovative devices that designers have shared on websites like Makers Making Change. These devices can be 3D printed anywhere in the world, making them even more accessible to those who need them. This year's class has researched and selected a number of devices to offer to our community. The informational video below highlights their selections.

Would you or a loved one benefit from an assistive device featured in the video? If so, we are here to help! To request a device, please fill out the Assistive Device Request form.

Join Us in the Design Challenge

In addition to fabricating existing designs, our students are gearing up for the 2025 Make:Able Design Challenge, where they will create their own innovative assisted technology designs. They are seeking clients who are willing to share their experiences and challenges to serve as inspiration.

If you or someone you know is interested in participating, please reach out to Matt Zigler at matt_zigler@bullis.org to express interest and potential collaboration. In the upcoming month, the class will select up to four clients to conduct interviews, either virtually via Google Meet or in person, to gather insights and better understand their needs.

The dedication of Bullis students to social good exemplifies the power of innovation in creating meaningful solutions for the community. Together, we can make a difference, one device at a time.
