Bullis Community Update: Attack on Israel

Bullis Community Update: Attack on Israel

Dear Bullis Community,

A message from Christian Sullivan, Head of School

This weekend’s attack on Israel, the outbreak of war, the devastating injuries, the loss of life, and the destruction in Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank have brought distress to the Bullis community, especially to those with deep connections to the region. I recognize the pain, fear, and anxiety that this escalating conflict is bringing to many of our families; we will support them.

I am more conscious than ever that the ubiquity of social media is bringing graphic images of extreme violence onto our screens–and the screens of our students–in ways that were impossible even a few years ago. And indeed, those involved in the violence are using videos and social media deliberately to do so. I know the parents of our younger students will likely be controlling access to even mainstream news channels, but this is understandably more difficult to do with our older students. We have already addressed this crisis with Upper School students and will continue to do so with Middle and Upper School students in appropriate ways and at appropriate times. In the meantime, I truly hope that students who are in need of support feel comfortable seeking out one of our five counselors or a faculty member with whom they have a close connection–including division heads, affinity group leaders, or me–if we can help.

History has shown that even when Israel is defending itself against horrific terrorism, a rise in antisemitism will follow. We must guard against this hate-filled bigotry at every turn. We also know that the terrorism itself may provoke Islamophobia, which, likewise, will not be tolerated at Bullis. We will support and protect our families who are subject to any and all forms of discrimination.

Please don't hesitate to reach out if there is anything we can do to help as this humanitarian crisis unfolds.

Sincerely,
