November 5: "The Upper School"

Welcome to the Upper School page of the Bullis website. Here you will find an overview of the many facets of the Bullis Upper School that make us a fantastic, warm, caring and challenging community. I encourage you to explore our course offerings, extracurricular activities, student clubs, student leadership opportunities, global study trips and much, much more.

Also, be sure to read about our faculty and staff. The Bullis Upper School would not be what it is without our dedicated and forward-thinking teachers who strive to engage students in and out of the classroom. Through technology, student-centered lessons, project based learning, and rigorous college prep courses, our teachers push our students to reach new heights and to have authentic success.

We embrace the Bullis motto “Lead the Bullis Way,” which encourages all students and adults to act with integrity, responsibility and respect while valuing diversity and service. While the website provides an overview of the Upper School and the “Bullis Way,” please visit us in person. The vibrancy you see on your screen is matched by the energy and enthusiasm you will find on campus.

I look forward to meeting you in the near future, and hope you enjoy exploring our website.

August 27: "Welcome Back"

As we approach the opening of the 2012-2013 school year, I find myself thinking about the magic and excitement of the first days of any new school year. For students and teachers, it is a chance to start anew, to create fresh patterns, and to channel the energy and growth gained from a summer of experience into the work done at Bullis. I am sure I will not be alone in my annual restless night’s sleep on Monday, September 3, as the anticipation gets the best of me and my mind wanders with the possibility of the year ahead. There is nothing like it.

Like most Bullis community members, my summer was both restful and rejuvenating. Time in the office was balanced with more time at home with my family. The days were quieter, but as the summer moved along, I found myself eagerly awaiting the sounds of school to once again overtake North Hall. Schools are not schools without students. Without them, they seem hollow and void of meaning. I am ready for our hallways to be full, for our new patio to be occupied, for seniors to see the renovated Commons, for teachers to do what they do best (TEACH!), and for Bullis students to flood into classrooms with their typical energy and enthusiasm. Yes, I am ready for summer to end and for the year to begin.

So as we share restless night sleeps and as we harness a certain giddiness as September 4 rolls around, I offer simple advice to Bullis community members, most specifically our students: be involved. I say every year that more you give to Bullis, the more you will get back. Come September 4, jump in with both feet firmly planted on the ground and embrace all that Bullis has to offer. You won’t regret it!

Welcome back, everyone, and here’s to a great school year ahead!
