Athletics Hall of Fame
While attending Bullis, Clay was a four-time letterman in swimming, serving as captain two years. He was All-IAC and a four-time winner of the school's most valuable swimmer award. Four times during his high school career he attained All-American status and was a member of the 1979 United States Pan American Team.
Clay attended the University of Texas on a full NCAA scholarship where he won three National Championships in the 100-yard backstroke. He was also a member of three National Championships relay teams. Clay was a four-time letterman, four times All-American, co-captain of the 1982-83 team and a member of Texas' Southwest Conference and NCAA Championship teams. Clay is a former American record holder in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 49.08 recorded at the 1981 NCAA meet. He still holds the Southwest Conference record in the 50-yard backstroke. He is one of only three swimmers to ever win three NCAA 100 yard backstroke titles.
