Middle schoolers make Bullis history

For the first time ever in our program's history, two Bullis 8th graders were named to the All-State Junior Orchestra and Band: Carolyn Tang (Orchestra-viola) and Sean Mao (Band-trombone). In addition, 7th grader Ronan Zwa was named as the tenor sax alternate to the All-State Junior Band.

"All three are extremely hard-working and dedicated to their musical studies,," said Visual & Performing Arts Director Cheryl Terwilliger. "They serve as leaders in their respective Bullis ensembles and also pursue groups outside of school."

The students were chosen for the All-State honor from among private and public school 7-9th graders from throughout the state of Maryland who auditioned. For the Junior Band, Sean was one of nine trombonists selected. For Junior Orchestra, Carolyn was one of 21 violas. Ronan was the single tenor sax alternate chosen.

Each of the All-State groups will meet for a weekend in March. Students will rehearse for several days under the baton of a renowned guest conductor and present a culminating concert at the conclusion of the event.
