Student Profiles

Maqui ’18

I came to Bullis in 6th grade. I love Bullis for the teachers and the students, and how community-centered and friendly it is.

I’m known as ‘the sports girl!’ That’s part of my identity here, and I like that! I play two varsity sports—basketball in winter and lacrosse in spring. I played tennis, also, in fall in 9th and 10th grade, too.

I plan to play basketball in college at Mount St. Mary’s University in Maryland, and have loved the game since I was 4 years old. Our ISL league is pretty competitive and our team works well together. We love to compete and fight to come back when we’re down.

I like to take a rigorous course-load here—you can choose a lot of APs and honors classes. I am taking molecular biology this year, and you can also take other really great electives and extras, like Anatomy and Personal Finance. It’s pretty cool that we can begin considering majors for college while we’re still in high school.

I want to be a cardiac surgeon. My favorite course recently was Honors Bio with Ms. Yen. It was hard and she’s a tough grader but I love how it really challenges you to study hard and be prepared.

My other activities include being a student ambassador and serving on the Conduct Review Board. I love visual art—especially painting with water colors. I discovered painting here, and hope to keep it up in college. It’s a great way to take a break from studying and from all the activity in my day—it’s a great outlet.

I had never played lax before coming to Bullis, and I had to play a second sport so I tried it. I love it now so much!
