April:
Jazz Café

An upbeat vibe and swinging tunes

Imagine a cool jazz club filled with an upbeat vibe and swinging tunes. Soloists and group numbers, improv and standards, along with great food and an enthusiastic crowd that loves all things jazz.

That’s the Bullis Jazz Café, the premier showcase for the School’s Jazz program.

Twice a year The Blair Family Center for the Arts is transformed into a jazz nightclub, filled with café tables, low light, fabulous acoustics and tasty food. The evening features performers from the Jazz program and collaborations with other school departments as well as guest musicians and bands. The April Jazz Café is also Senior Night, when those graduating student-musicians are highlighted and given extra time to solo and shine.

Jazz Cafés were my favorite events! Individual notes become melodies, melodies turn into musical interpretations and technical lessons make confident performers. Being a member of the band throughout Upper School was like being a part of an instant family. It was a place of rigor, relevance and engagement, while also being a place for nurturing, friendship and growth.
