Adventures in Creative Writing

Take an expedition into the sometimes challenging, always exhilarating experience of creating a story to entertain others. Every narrative needs a hero, and every hero has a boss: the writer who creates him or her. In Creative Writing, the campers are the bosses! They learn effective writing strategies, including how to produce a propulsive plot, populate it with unpredictable characters, incorporate humor when possible, build to a compelling climax and leave readers wanting more. Campers are taught how to construct irresistible opening lines, craft cliffhangers both epic and subtle and use metaphor to develop their distinctive identities as writers. Each day will involve lively discussion and self-examination.

Director: Marcie Demers is currently the 6th Grade Language Arts instructor and Grade Level Coordinator at the Bullis Middle School. Recipient of the Richard K. Jung Faculty First award in 2016, Ms. Demers brings her passion and expertise to Bullis Summer Programs for the third consecutive year. As the Adventures in Creative Writing and What's the Buzz, Camp Reporters? instructor, she strives to maintain engaging and relevant learning experiences for her campers as they learn to find their voice in expressing their ideas in a variety of formats.
