Director of Development

Bullis School, a coeducational nonsectarian independent school of 636 students on an 80-acre campus in Potomac, seeks an experienced Director of Development to direct and to expand the annual, capital, and planned giving programs; the alumni program; publications; and special events.

Bullis, which was founded in 1930, anticipates a 50% enrollment increase over the next decade, to 900 students. To meet growing enrollment and new curricular needs, the Board of Trustees has identified $60,000,000 in facility and endowment projects to be funded during the decade to come. The School is currently in the planning phase of a major capital campaign which will begin during the 2008-09 school year.  

The Director of Development reports to and works closely with the Head of School, and is a member of the school’s administrative team. Responsibilities include directing and expanding the School’s advancement program (annual fund, capital, and planned giving, communications, special events and alumni relations). The Director is responsible for developing and maintaining active and productive relationships with Board members, donors and other administrators. He/she supervises a staff of ten, including Director of Annual Giving, Major Gifts Officer, Director of Alumni Relations, Director of Communications, Events Coordinator, part-time Web site Coordinator, part-time Publications Manager, part-time Database Manager, Development Associate for Capital Campaign and an Administrative Assistant. This position also works closely with the Board of Trustees and serves as staff to the Development and Governance Committees. 

Candidates should have: Experience designing and managing development programs including annual and capital giving; demonstrated success identifying and cultivating major donor prospects; proven success in increasing participation in fundraising appeals among all the school’s constituencies;  superior organizational, interpersonal and communication skills. Experience with and knowledge of Raiser’s Edge software is desirable. Experience working with independent schools is preferred. Proven ability to oversee, motivate and supervise a staff of high talent individuals. Bachelor’s Degree and minimum of 10 years experience in Development.

The desired start date is June 1, with some flexibility for the right candidate.

Director of Summer and Auxiliary Programs

Bullis seeks an experienced professional to lead and grow the School’s summer programs and after-school enrichment programs.

Summer programs at Bullis currently include a thriving day camp for younger campers, a variety of sports camps for boys and girls and fledgling programs in the arts, academics and adventure. Summer enrollment currently averages 400 campers per week. The School aspires to grow summer enrollment substantially, by offering a wider variety of programs and by reaching potential campers and their parents more effectively through an improved marketing program. The School also desires to develop a varied after-school enrichment program for lower and middle school students during the academic year.

Candidates should have: 1) experience in, and in-depth knowledge of, DC-area school summer programs; 2) the ability to design and launch a variety of successful new summer and enrichment programs; 3) demonstrated skill in recruiting, supporting and retaining high-talent teachers and coaches, both within and beyond Bullis; 4) the ability to develop and manage a comprehensive marketing program, including market research; 5) excellent interpersonal skills with campers, parents and colleagues; 6) strong writing and presentation skills; 7) strong organizational and managerial skills; and 8) proficiency in Word, Excel and database software.

The Director of Summer and Auxiliary Programs will report to the Business Officer, and will manage an Assistant Summer Director. The desired start date is June 1, with some flexibility for the right candidate. This is a full-time, twelve-month position.
