English Objectives

  • Develop skills in self-expression by enhancing vocabulary and to writing in a variety of forms and styles for different audiences
  • Improve reading skills and comprehension through extensive reading
  • Master the grammar and syntax of standard written English and develop skillful fluency in its use
  • Enter into the conversation of literature, representing a richness of different forms, cultures and voices
  • Learn how to formulate questions in response to texts and to the world

Grade 6

In sixth grade Language Arts, students learn to read critically, to write clearly and to speak effectively. Teachers integrate vocabulary, grammar, listening and speaking skills into discussions of literature and personal experience. All students take Latin in their sixth-grade year.

Grade 7

Students in this course are immersed in grammar concept and usage applications, vocabulary acquisition strategies and the analytical writing process. Teachers give direct instruction on essay writing and reading strategies. Independent reading and writing in and out of the classroom complement student knowledge base.

Grade 8

In the eighth grade students produce narrative as well as analytical writing in order to master sentence structure, punctuation and paragraphing rules. Teachers employ a variety of literary genres and points of view as the basis for exercises in oral and written expression.
