Summer Reading
The purpose of summer reading in Lower School is to help develop the love of reading. Summer reading expectations mirror expectations we have for children during the year: children should plan to read for pleasure from a book of their choosing most nights of the week for 15 - 20 minutes. We feel book choice is essential in helping children develop a love of reading, especially as children's independent reading levels vary greatly at this age. We encourage children to read from a wide variety of genres and to find genres, topics or authors they particularly enjoy. Recommended titles of books are sent home in the Bullis summer packet and are available on the Bullis Web site.
After a child finishes a book, he or she should record the important information (title, author, date completed, favorite character or scene, any other important information that will help jog a memory) on a 4" X 6" index card and bring the cards to school on the first day. These cards will be at the core of book discussion groups the first week or so of school and will be on file for other children to use as they search for books.
