Social Studies Objectives

Grade 3
The social studies program for the third grade focuses on developing map-reading skills and exploring how communities develop, beginning with the Bullis community and then moving on to the rich cultural diversity of the Washington, D.C., area. Activities include field trips, creating three-dimensional maps and examining artifacts from the local area. Students have various ways to demonstrate knowledge including writing, creating visual images and making presentations.
Grade 4
The fourth grade social studies course is a regional study of the geography of the United States. Reading comprehension, writing and the use of technology, along with many math and science connections, are integral parts of this course. Research and study skills are introduced and developed through class projects. Content includes a study of the native peoples in each region as well as individual research on states. The year ends with a traditional state fair.
Grade 5
This course introduces students to United States history beginning with the Age of Exploration. Colonial America, the Road to Revolution, the American Revolution, Early Government (the Constitution) and Westward Expansion are major topics of the year. Both reading and writing skills are emphasized; language arts and technology are integrated on a consistent basis. Both narrative and traditional texts are used. Activities include a Colonial Day, debates and simulations and an end-of-the-year trip to Jamestown and Colonial Williamsburg.
