Science

Science Objectives

  1. To foster and develop scientific curiosity and reasoning
  2. To be able to observe, record, classify and compare data
  3. To follow scientific procedure and interpret data
  4. To understand scientific methods in developing hypotheses and testing them
  5. To acquire the necessary manipulative skills to use scientific equipment and to conduct experiments responsibly

Grade 3

The third grade science program incorporates thinking and processing skills that allow students to build their proficiency as problem solvers and decision makers. The units include life science, physical science and earth science in a spiral curriculum as the children move through the Lower School. Emphasis is placed on discovery through hands-on experiments as well as the scientific process.

Grade 4

The fourth grade science class continues to build upon concepts learned in the third grade in the areas of life science, physical science and earth science. Ecosystems, the environment, Earth’s forces, the solar system and flight are some of the concepts covered. This is an inquiry-based program with an emphasis on hands-on experiments that follow procedures used by scientists to solve problems, including making predictions, working with variables, making and recording observations and drawing conclusions.

Grade 5

This course is an extension of the fourth grade science curriculum focusing on the life, physical and earth sciences. Topics include living things, adaptations, matter, forms of energy, motion and the earth. This curriculum introduces several new concepts and encourages in-depth, critical thinking. Hands-on experiments continue to be a large part of the curriculum.
